Galgos are used to hunt rabbits, hares and boars on the plains. Following the end of hunting season most galgos are burnt alive, beaten to death or killed, often being hung from trees because their owners are not able to afford to keep the dogs through the winter. Galgos that hunted successfully are hung from higher branches so they die relatively quickly. Dogs that performed badly are hung from the lower branches with their feet just touching the ground resulting in a long drawn out death.
Congreytulations on your successful trip and to the new immigrants! I've been following the galgo situation for several years, including making over 50 coats for GIN,SOS Galgos, and Cadiz. My current 3 rescued racers are 6,6, and 10. When they leave this earth I would like my next adoption to be a galgo, both because I think they are particularly lovely (esp the ethereal-looking whites), and because I have some medical issues which would be easier with a somewhat smaller dog.
ReplyDeleteI envy and admire your Spanish experience!
